Statement analysis is more than a discipline, it is a comprehensive guide to success in every field.

What is Statement Analysis?

Statement Analysis is a critical investigative tool used to examine a person’s words — spoken or written — in order to detect deception, verify truthfulness, uncover hidden and sensitive information, reveal relationship between people, attitude towards events; indicate tone, profile an individual and much more. By focusing on the structure, order, wording, and subtle linguistic cues within a statement, analysts can identify inconsistencies, omissions, and signs of evasion. In law enforcement, this discipline helps investigators move beyond what’s being said to understand what’s being avoided, bringing clarity to interviews, reports, and interrogations. Every word matters — and analysis reveals what they might be trying not to say.
Statement Analysis is more than just listening carefully — it’s a systematic method for identifying truth, deception, and hidden meaning in communication. By focusing on the specific words people choose, the structure of their sentences, and what they leave unsaid, statement analysis provides insights that traditional questioning or observation might miss.

Key Benefits

01. Detecting Deception

One of the most powerful uses of statement analysis is identifying when someone is being deceptive. People often reveal more than they intend through their words — small linguistic cues like unnecessary qualifiers (“to be honest”), distancing language (“that woman” instead of “my wife”), or changes in tense can point to dishonesty or discomfort.
Example: In a missing persons case, a suspect saying, “I would never hurt her,” rather than “I didn’t hurt her,” could signal avoidance of a direct denial — prompting further investigation.

02. Uncovering Hidden Information

Often, what someone doesn’t say is just as important as what they do. Gaps in a story, skipped details, or vague language can indicate withheld information. Statement analysis helps pinpoint those areas for deeper questioning.
Example: If a witness skips over a key moment in their timeline, or rushes through a description, it may indicate discomfort or intentional omission.

03. Improving Interviewing Techniques

When interviewers understand statement analysis, they know what to listen for — and what to ask next. It allows for more strategic, focused questioning based on linguistic cues, rather than just intuition.
Example: If a suspect avoids pronouns or ownership of actions (“There was a fight” vs. “I fought him”), the interviewer can probe that avoidance.

04. Supporting Evidence in Court

While not always admissible as direct evidence, statement analysis can guide investigators to corroborating evidence or false claims. It also helps refine witness statements, identify inconsistencies, and prepare for cross-examination.
Example: In fraud investigations, a careful review of written statements can reveal deception patterns that help support the case.

5. Applicable Across Fields

Though often used in law enforcement, the principles of statement analysis are valuable in fields like:

  • Law enforcement (providing critical knowledge in statements, saving time to conduct an investigation, making effective and accurate assessments, having in-depth knowledge right from the vital few hours of an investigation),
  • Agencies and institutions (gain inclusive operational system in order to achieve your goals- fight online bullying, violence against women and children, sexual misconduct with children and many more),
  • Human Resources (resolving internal complaints, selecting candidates, resolving issues),
  • Marketing & sales (having the ability to properly navigate a situation, achieve goals and gain valuable insight about clients),
  • Psychology (identifying trauma indicators in narrative, psychological disturbances etc.),
  • Corporate security (internal investigations or risk assessment),
  • Social work (detecting problematic situations ahead of time)
  • Journalism (spotting spin or evasive language),
  • Anyone who would like to be able to unveil the real motivations, attitude and goals behind people’s communication.

Why It Works

Our brains do not like to lie!
Statement analysis is effective because language is hard to fake under stress or deception. Language is produced at a speed of a few nanoseconds.
When people lie, their subconscious often “leaks” information through their word choices, modifies order, injects specific words etc.
Unlike body language, which can be controlled or misread, words — especially in written or transcribed statements — provide a permanent, analyzable record.
